Getting started on social media

Many businesses recognise the importance of having a social media presence but struggle with how to get started.

Choosing your platform

There are so many social media platforms to choose from with the main ones including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Facebook. Different platforms will work for different businesses so it’s important to assess which platform(s) will work best for you. Think about your target audience and which social media channels they use the most. Your social media goals and objectives will also help you when choosing which channels to go with.

Devising a social media strategy

A social media strategy will help guide you through your social media journey. Use the strategy to map out your business objectives and how you’re going to help achieve them through your social media channels. Refer back to your strategy on a regular basis to analyze your social media performance and feedback into the strategy. Strategies can include everything from a guide on how to take great content to an analysis of your competitors.

Consistency is key

You must be prepared to be consistent when you start your social media journey. Once you create your accounts, you will need to maintain a regular schedule of posting. Social media will become a key part of your business so you need the capacity to be able to manage it properly. In many cases your social media will double up as a customer service tool.

Content creation

Good quality content is key on social media. I’d advise having a handful of content ready to go out before you start your social media journey. Depending on the app, you’ll need both video and photo content. You should try and always plan your content in advance so you can maintain a consistent posting schedule. When shooting content, you can use either a mobile phone or camera and always ensure you’re shooting in HD quality.

Experiment with your content

The start of your social media journey is the perfect time to experiment with your content. Try out different video styles, photo layouts and captions to see what works best with your audience.
